Piazza del Duomo, the most visited and largest square in the historic center of Milan, Lombardy, Italy Photo credit: @lifebeyondthewire ° Piazza del Duomo ("Cathedral Square") is the main city square and the vital center of Milan, a city in northern Italy. It is named after, and dominated by the Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral), a Gothic cathedral with a marble interior and elevators up to rooftop city views. While the piazza was originally created in the 14th century and has been gradually developing ever since (along with the Duomo, which took about six centuries to complete), its overall plan, in its current form, dates to the second half of the 19th century. The Duomo area with its rectangular shape is made up of shops, monuments, theaters and restaurants, and much more. It is where everyone goes when they first come to Milan. Famous for its eye-catching architecture in the style of flamboyant Gothic, the Milan Cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete, from 1386 to 1965. It is the largest church in Italy and possibly the second largest in Europe and the third largest in the world.
