Okinawa is celebrating the 77th "Okinawa Memorial Day" to mourn the victims of the Battle of Okinawa at the end of the 1945 Pacific War. In the Battle of Okinawa, the precious lives of 220,000 people living in Okinawa (a quarter of the residents of Okinawa) were lost. Now 90% of Okinawans are born after the war.
The monument was erected by a town project commemorating the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's return to Japan, and was realized by donations from inside and outside the town. It is 2.5 meters high and 4.9 meters wide, with lyrics engraved and a song played when you press the button on the side.
At the time of the Battle of Okinawa, both Japanese and US troops fought violently in Nishihara Town (Nishihara Village at that time). Half of the inhabitants died due to being involved in battle.
