The Girls’ Last Tour soundtrack is deceptive in its efficacy. It has taken me numerous listens and proper contemplation to truly appreciate how well-crafted it is. While supporting the atmosphere of a spartan, post-apocalyptic environment, each OST balances a positivity within itself to reinforce GLT’s ultimately positive core message.

Nope. Before anyone asks, I haven’t watched Frieren. I won’t speak for his works for Symphogear (I’ve not listened to them) but every Evan Call soundtrack I have absorbed has been fantastic. He has an instantly recognisable, grounded charm in his composing. A delicacy and humility within his tone and an unashamed sense of worldly wonder that I happily lose myself in.

I don’t talk about this soundtrack and have no clue why that is because I absolutely adore it. Its tone is incredible: the melancholic sense of loss, yearning for brighter days passed but without pain and sorrow. It has an elegant feel, and while not as thematically heavy as NieR (for example), it is no less spectacular. Christopher Larkin set himself a high bar to clear for future works.

Much like my love for the team at MONACA, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the HiguUmiSound crew.. Outside of the Higurashi and Ciconia soundtracks, the team provided the soundtrack for the Square Enix magical girl game Mashiro Witch - Midnight Marchen. I adore Luck Ganriki’s slightly pompous, yet wondrously magical aesthetic. For those who’ve experienced Umineko, “Golden Sneer” would be his most recognisable track bearing this feel.

Keishi who? Keishi Urata: low-key legend. While Texhnolyze may be his only anime composing credit, he has contributed synthesiser manipulation and programming to several iconic soundtracks, including Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell S.A.C and Space Dandy. He also served as sound designer for the Akira movie. Previously a member of The Seatbelts, you’ll find him credited on just about every soundtrack Yoko Kanno has worked on. On the Texhnolyze soundtrack, Urata delivers an eclectic electronic vibe in direct contrast to the warmer, human feel of Hajime Mizoguchi’s compositions. Together, this discord perfectly reinforces Texhnolyze’s key ideological conflict.

It may not have the thematically richest story, but REDLINE sports a banger soundtrack and animation born of uninhibited imagination. Energetic but never chaotic, it immerses the viewer in the adrenaline-charged setting of the Redline intergalactic race. James Shimoji would later score the music for the Lupin III movies “Fujiko Mine’s Lie” and “Jigen’s Gravestone”.

I’m uncertain if finishing CLANNAD resulted in my recent hiatus, but it certainly didn’t prevent it. Occassionally, I know I haven’t given a piece of work a fair chance, most often because I wasn’t in the best frame of mind to approach it. At some point in time, CLANNAD will have that revisit, though maybe as the VN.

I’d like to further explore Shinji Orito’s catalogue. Based on what I’ve listened to between the Kanon and CLANNAD soundtracks, he does a great job with the lighter, bouncier slice-of-life tracks.

To me, “Kotobara” is a quintessential Fuminori Matsumoto composition. It begins with a delicate thematic that transitions into the same melody in the middle register. Its repetition is akin to an internal dialogue, reflecting upon an experience. The move into a markedly different thematic suggests some form of conflict or tension that will require resolution. It’s the resolution that Matsumoto scores in signature fashion: a strong communication of the melody in the upper register supported by the depth of lower register chords without counter melody. There’s a recognition of the past conflict but a determination to move forward positively. In a word, it’s uplifting.

‼️ Do I really need to announce there are spoilers? ‼️ Twilight of the Golden Witch brings an end to my Umineko journey, solidifying my already high regard for its soundtrack. I have always felt its strength lies in the tonal consistency of the OSTs in spite of their obvious genre diversity; the Umineko atmosphere is so engaging and immersive because of this. I do feel I have a lot more to discover in this soundtrack, particularly the melodic links between certain songs and their thematic implications, but that can be saved for a reread in the future. Guess I’ll have to wrap my head around a “best of” OST post at some stage… Composer credits 8, 5: grasun cat 7, 2: dai 6, 4: xaki 3: ZTS 1: Akiko Shikata

‼️ Yeah, a few good spoilers to be found here. ‼️ I thought Requiem of the Golden Witch would give us a glimpse of some positivity for the members of the Ushiromiya family whilst resolving the mystery of the murders. While the latter may have been achieved, the former certainly wasn’t. If anything, the misery and misfortune surrounding the Ushiromiya family was only further compounded is spectacular fashion. The biggest casualty from my pre-conceptions has been Rain. Gorgeous track, but completely underwhelming usage. Composer credits 9: dai 8, 5: xaki 7, 6, 4: ZTS 3: cap 2: -45 1: Luck Ganriki

‼️ Pretty much any picture is a spoiler in this post… ‼️ Dawn of the Golden Witch saw me make some really tough decisions about which tracks I omitted. I’ve asserted from the start that my rankings were a combination of a track’s function within the story and my enjoyment of it. As such, tracks like Rog-Limitation, Ruiair and Liberatedliberator are casualties in an episode soundtrack which felt a little lacklustre after the OST highs of End of the Golden Witch. Fuminori Matsumoto (a.k.a. szak) has recently grown to be one of my favourite composers. His music has an unmistakably firm elegance, centred on a tonal weight that imparts added strength to the emotional narrative without overpowering it. This draws the listener in and further invests them in that narrative. He has contributed to several visual novel soundtracks, including Atri, Grisaia and Sakura no Uta, including the latter’s highly anticipated sequel, Sakura no Toki.
