When we decided to celebrate jamdani through our online event called ‘Jamdani যাপন (japon)’, we wanted to make it fun and interesting. Celebrating jamdani not only means showcasing beautiful sarees for sale, but also raising awareness and fostering appreciation for the craft. So over these next couple of weeks we shall be talking about jamdani. Though much has been talked and debated upon on social media already, our views and learnings are strictly our own - from our own research and first hand experience of working directly with skilled jamdani weavers over several years.
So let’s learn our “butis” or motifs. Most of the traditional butis have drawn inspiration from Nature. In due course they were given local names by the weavers. Today’s buti is called “বাঘের পাড়া ফুল (Bagher para phool)”. Though we are not sure how this name originated, we can assume that there is a resemblance to the tiger’s paw, hence the name (“bagh” in Bangla means tiger). The “বাঘনলি ফুল (baghnoli phool)” is also quite similar, almost same.
